Ban "Smart"meters in Seattle

Ban "Smart"meters in Seattle

Dear Seattle City Council Members, Sally Clark, President; Sally Bagshaw, Tim Burgess, Kshama Sawant, Jean Godden, Bruce Harrell, Nick Licata, Mike O'Brien, Tom Rasmussen: We the undersigned demand a ban on Seattle City Light's planned implementation of "smart" meters (otherwise known as Advanced Metering Initiative - AMI).

Why is this important?

"Smart" meters are being rapidly implemented around the globe under the guise of "green" energy, with unsubstantiated claims of energy savings and greater efficiency. The utilities back up their claims by citing the selective research of corporate paid "scientists", ignoring the work of independent research such as found in the Bio Initiative Report.

As documented in the film, "Take Back Your Power", smart meters are a false solution to the urgent problem of climate change, and are likely to result in higher utility bills for rate payers, increased collection of private data in violation of the Fourth Amendment, threats to cyber security, and home fires, increased levels of cancer mortality and morbidity worldwide due to increased radio-frequency exposure, diminishment of the global food supply by contributing to bee colony collapse disorder, disappearance of wildlife, and other deleterious effects yet to be foreseen.

The collective effect of the smart grid will be to offer tax-payer subsidized handouts to a handful of corporations, distracting the American people from the urgent need to address rising atmospheric carbon levels in meaningful ways, while causing harm to living beings and society in a variety of ways yet to be considered or understood.

We urge you to cancel City Light's plan to install smart meters in Seattle and consider other measures to increase your support for small scale, decentralized renewable energy projects and conservation.

How it will be delivered

Petition to be delivered in person to City Councilmember, Kshama Sawant, Kshama chairs the Energy and Environment Committee.

Reasons for signing

  • I just learned Seattle Light's public comment deadline re Smart meters is Aug. 15, 2016. So, I hope these petitions will be submitted by that date, regardless of the number of signatures gathered by then.
  • Just watched the documentary "Take Back your Power" - scary implications for the uses of the so-called "Smart Meters".
  • This is really scary. I live right next to a bank of power meters and I do not want to get sick.

400 signatures! Please keep sharing as we grow our movement.

The petition is gaining numbers quickly. Please continue to share on your social networks. At the last City Council meeting, the Council delayed giving City Light the green light on smart meters for 3 months and directed them to produce documentation on the safety of smart meters. Although this will likely be a rubber stamping exercise with paid industry science proclaiming safety, we have gained valuable time to awaken the public on the urgency of the Electronic Silent Spring our planet is facing, and the abuses of power in our corporate run society.

Meanwhile, the Take Back Your Power team has developed powerful solutions for halting the smart meter invasion that do not depend upon appealing to the moral consciences of politicians. We need your voice and involvement. Let's create a better world. Share the petition please. Let's reach 500 signatures in the next week.

Dear Friends,

A lot of good news is happening. We are moving closer to 250 signatures! Please keep sharing the petition. Last night, Bethany Church on Beacon Hill hosted a screening of the film, Take Back Your Power and approximately 50 people turned out. We need your support tomorrow morning at the City Council meeting which begins at 9:30 a.m. The City Council needs to understand and see the growing numbers of people who oppose smart meters. The website: is finalizing tools for individuals to remove their contractual consent to City Light's plan. This would refuse any installation of a smart meter. There is no law that says you must accept a smart meter, but you need to know how to assert your rights and to navigate the legal terrain. It's not difficult, as others have already blazed that trail for us. Please come tomorrow and stay tuned (pardon the pun). Peace, Jordan

2013-10-17 07:47:44 -0700 Take Back Your Power takes us on a journey of revelation and discovery, as we question the benefits and risks of "smart" meters and grid technology... and corporate practices to tap private information and erode our rights in the name of "green". What you discover will surprise you, unsettle you, and inspire you to challenge the status quo

This article is another excellent summary of research on wireless radiation, including smart meters, and adds serious weight to the serious questions of safety facing this new technology:
