Ban GMO crops on Hawaii Island by signing Bill 113

We did it! Everything we could of hoped for with our petition happened: Hawaii Island Mayor Billy Kenoi signed Bill 113 into law on Thursday, December 5. And to top it off, the mayor also wrote a really well done letter voicing why he signed Bill 113 into law. Here is an excerpt from his letter:

"Our community has a deep connection and respect for our land, and we all understand we must protect our island and preserve our precious natural resources. We are determined to do what is right for the land because this place is unlike any other place in the world. With this new ordinance we are conveying that instead of global agribusiness corporations, we want to encourage and support community-based farming and ranching."

Ban GMO crops on Hawaii Island by signing Bill 113

The people of Hawaii County overwhelmingly oppose the planting of untested, potentially dangerous crops. We urge you to listen to the will of the people and do the right thing by signing Bill 113 into law.

Why is this important?

In 2002, my son was poisoned by pesticide drift from a nearby farm on Hawaii Island. My son and all the other kids in his school were sent home due to reports of severe dizziness and inability to focus. My son wasn't quite himself for 2 days.

The farming of genetically modified, herbicide-resistant crops not only encourages more pesticide use and more potential for incidents like my son experienced -- it threatens our biodiversity, our land, and our capacity for self-sufficiency in producing the food we eat.

For 15 years I leased old sugar plantation land to start my own farm. I saw firsthand the effects created by industrial farming practices have on the land: worn out and poisoned soils. Genetically modified crops are the next step in this type of farming, and we need to put up a stop sign before allowing this type of farming to become the new "normal".

Right now Hawaii imports over 90% of it's food. Biotech companies claim that greater use of genetically modified crops will make our state more self-sufficient in our food supply, but in reality they are growing these crops on the other four islands for use in industrial agriculture in other parts of the world. And because genetically modified seeds must be re-purchased by farmers every season, there is no chance to adapt crops to local climate conditions through locally grown seeds by our farmers -- something key to our food security.

We need Mayor Kenoi to sign Bill 113 into law and ban the production of genetically modified crops to protect our biodiversity and prevent further contamination of our seed supply, the destruction of our land, and the poisoning of our families through increased pesticide use. We shouldn't ignore the risks of becoming even more dependent on industrial agriculture just to produce crops shipped elsewhere.

During the last half year, there has been a record breaking amount of testimony in support of this type of legislation on Hawaii Island. The people here understand that they don't want this island to end up with the toxic farming industries that are already entrenched on the other islands in the State of Hawaii. Mayor Kenoi has said he'll make a decision on Bill 113 within the next week, so it's more important than ever to help us continue building pressure on Mayor Kenoi by signing my petition.

Reasons for signing

  • Aloha, if you haven't done so yet, please sign this petition to the mayor and the county council to pass Bill 113. Mahalo.
  • We are what we eat. GMOs are scientifically known to cause tumors, thinning of intestinal walls and bleeding stools on pigs who's digestive systems are similar to ours. Also cancer and death to lab rats. Why on God's green earth would I want that in my food? Food is to fortify the body, not to make it sick. We must fight for our right to have healthy food.
  • Because foo was already perfect the way it was created. I care about myself,my community and future generations to come.....Stop messing with our food, water and a child of the planet we have a right to clean natural resources without need to pay as soon as the umbilical cord is severed. Get AloHa? get Natural! or better yet...SuperNatural.
