Immediately cease consideration of any legislation that strips women seeking legal medical procedures of bodily autonomy.

Why is this important?

This February, anti-choice legislative leaders declared making mandatory ultrasounds a priority for the 2013 legislative session. At a time when Wisconsin faces very real challenges and Wisconsin families have very real concerns about their access to the basic necessities of life, making a priority out of a redundant and invasive forced ultrasound law is dangerous.

Wisconsin already has a de facto ultrasound law. I know this because I had to have an ultrasound to have an abortion ten years ago in 2003. To ensure that my pregnancy was within the pre-determined “acceptable timeframe” for an abortion, I underwent an ultrasound. I sat in an exam room and listened while a nurse practitioner explained to me how she was determining the age of my fetus. It did not change my mind. It did cost me an entire week’s worth of pay. Why is the legislature wasting resources on a bill to accomplish that which is already happening?

Because it could be worse.

The proposed legislation includes language that could mandate egregiously invasive trans-vaginal ultrasounds for very early-term abortions. The procedure mandated by a forced ultrasound bill will be implemented without the woman's consent. In Wisconsin, the definition of rape includes forcible penetration by a foreign object without consent. Forced trans-vaginal ultrasounds are state-sanctioned rape.

This law does nothing to address medical issues or the very real economic problems Wisconsin faces - instead it legislates morality at the expense of our individual autonomy. We need to make sure that Wisconsin legislators hear from every single one of us that we refuse to allow government to violate women.

Tell the Wisconsin legislature to oppose any bill that could require women to undergo invasive transvaginal ultrasounds without their consent. Tell Wisconsin legislators to get to work solving the problems Wisconsin families face rather than creating new ones.

Anything performed out of the parameters of medical necessity should not be performed, especially when its not something the patient even wants, its used to make a women feel guilty. It's not right. It's designed to make a woman have second thoughts about what she is doing. Every woman has her reason and its rarely ever an easy one.

Please read these petitions advocating municipal environmental contraception funding, which is increasingly politically realistic due to The Big Sort in more and more towns, and helps women's rights, quality of life, and school taxes as well as being at least 5 times more cost-effective than any other environmental effort.
